Tips for Getting Started
We firmly believe that great things happen when even one person dreams. This is a grassroots project that depends on creative and committed "spark people" rather than institutional initiative. We can learn from our brothers and sisters across the country as well as our neighbors down the road. Here are some thoughts on what we've learned so far.

Who can partner

While anyone is welcome to use the ideas on this site, we're envisioning primarily partnerships between established groups. Potential Muslim partners include mosques, Islamic centers, schools or student groups. Potential Christian partners: churches, schools, youth groups, social service agencies.

Listen deeply
Be patient
Start small
|
One goal of the Common Ground Project is to expand our capacity to really listen to one another. In particular, in responding to Islamophobia it is critically important that Christians listen to Muslims to find out what activities and actions will be helpful. This is likely to vary from one locale or partnership to another.
Controversy and division are much easier to prevent than they are to calm. Begin by building relationships and avoid pushing through an agenda. Every respectful conversation is a step forward on a spiritual level. Regular prayer and meditation - letting go and seeking divine guidance and help - make all the difference.
This effort intends to be local and nimble. We seek to avoid getting bogged down or stopped by bureaucracy. Begin with an organization you expect to be sympathetic to the effort. Approach at the small, local level rather than city-wide or denominational level. An official “no” at a larger level can preclude what might have been possible on a smaller level. This is about effective networking and empowering individuals. The free exchange of information on the Web can expand the impact of even a small local effort.
