Committing to a Statement of Solidarity

We all share a responsibility to speak out against violence, particularly when the perpetrators claim to commit it in our name.  Christians are called to speak out against Islamophobia and to declare ourselves clearly and publicly on the side of peace and healing. Alone we can do little; linked with members of our congregations and larger networks we can have a major impact.

Gaining Assent
Our commitment to respect and nonviolence applies to the process of establishing a statement of solidarity. Some community members are likely to be uncomfortable with taking action for a variety of reasons. Be patient, provide information, trust in God's action. This can be a great time to sponsor a lecture, class or discussion group on Islam. See our education resources for more information.
Selecting and Composing
Each situation requires its own solution. You may well come up with something not mentioned on this page. If you do, please let us know at sfrcmn@gmail.com!

A simple visual can be a powerful witness internally and to visitors - particularly Muslim visitors. This can be posted on a wall inside your church or school, on your website, in your dorm, or....

Sample statement

This statement can be used as is, or revised to suit your community:

"We stand in solidarity with our Muslim brothers and sisters, affirming our common heritage as spiritual descendants of Abraham. We condemn hostile and intolerant actions done in the name of religion or directed at human beings because of their faith. We pledge ourselves to reach out in friendship, not fear, and to work together toward the Beloved Community. We ask God’s blessing and guidance on our way."
